Final Version

This is my finished version of my DVD disk in illustrator. I have placed the logo at the bottom of the disk so no empty space is left on the disk so therfore I have completed creating the DVD disk label.

Logo

I created my DVD Logo by following a tutorial online to create a fantastic logo for this movie. I then added the word Premium on the banner for this logo to make it outstanding and creating a premium effect on it. I used the pen tool to create this logo by creating the shape around the logo and then adding two circle shapes between them.

Rating Logo

I also have to add the rating logo on to the disk just like I did on the movie cover. Below is the reference link where I got the image from. I put the rating logo just opposite where the DVD Logo is so it looks much better with a logo on each side of the disk.

DVD Logo

Now that I have added an image on my disk and a movie title I now will need a DVD Logo which will tell the audience whether this disk is a DVD or a Blueray disk. I got this image from Google Images and below I have referenced the source of the image. I therefore placed this image at the side of my disk just under the horizontal guide line.

Creating the Movie Title on Disk

Creating the Movie Title

I used the Type tool in Illustrator to write the words Monsters at the Carribean at the top of the disk. The after this I used various effects on it to make it turn into a blood effect text.  So first of all I changed the colour of the text in to light and dark red by using the Gradient colours to create a blood type effect on the movie title. The reason why I choose to use Gradient colour over a normal colour is because a gradient colour had two layers of colours light and dark therefore it at attracts the movie title to lot of audiences.

Next I increased the Stroke of the movie title up to 7pt and this essentailly increases the outline of the text and the reason for that is because it should stand out from the rest of the image on the disk giving it a monster feeling to it. Then I went into the Effects tab and went on to Stylize - Outer Glow. I used a dark black glow for this movie title to create dark patches around the text.

Creating a Clipping Mask for DVD Disk

Now that I have done some research in creating a DVD disk I will now going make a start with my DVD disk. To start things off I decided to find a pirates at the caribbean wallpaper which will be my background image for my disk. The reason why I chose this specific wallpaper is because it creates an evil effect on this movie as this wallpaper has a pictures of a skull and swords around it.

To create the wallpaper into a disk shape I used something called a Clipping Mask. This essentially allows me to apply a shape around the image and then in illustrator go on to Object - Clipping Mask - Make and then it crops the image around the circle shape I created so it fits on to the disk shape.

Vector Images

To create my DVD disk I must use Vector Images rather than Bitmap. This is because Bitmap images tend to go blurry when it is zoomed into it whereas vector image stays the same whether you zoom in or out.

Vector Images stores information about the image and these information are Location, Fill Colour, Outline Colour, Thickness  of Line, Store using Co- Ordinates.

This goes the same with the logo that I have to create as that also needs to be Vector based and it should also compliment my DVD Cover.

Examples of Vector Images:

DVD Disk Guides

The program that I will be using to create my DVD disk is Adobe Illustrator. But before I can start I will need to create guides for the disk so like an outline of it. This is to make sure that everything on the disk is safe from being cut off when it is printed out. Below is a screenshot of the guides that I created for my DVD disk.

Brainstorming Ideas for DVD Disk

Now that I have completed my DVD cover I will now come up with some ideas on how to create the DVD disk. So to do I researched a different variety of DVD disks similar to my movie for example: Pirates at the Caribbean series and try to come up with different ideas to create my disk.

Here are some images I found on Google Images with each different design on the disk.

Finished Version of DVD Cover

This is my finished version of my dvd movie cover in photoshop.

Adding Credits

To finish off my dvd movie cover I need to add credits to the backcover which usually outlines who the director of the film is, how long the film lasts for, company logos etc. I went on Google Images to get an image of the credits and saved it on my computer and then I used that for my dvd cover.

After this I used the sharpen tool on the three images and on the credits which allowed me to see the image much more sharply and get rid of any blur on it.

Adding Text on the Back Cover

The next stage of my project is to add some text about the movie on the back cover. To do this I went on to Lipsum.com and this is a website which allows you to generate words, paragraphs etc in to sentences which then can be used to add in to your work. I therefore generated a paragraph which is in latin to add it to my back cover of my movie. The reason why I changed the colour of the text to bright yellow was to stand the text out because it had a dark background behind it so a darker text colour would not be suitable in this context.

Creating the Back Cover

To create the back cover I am going to start off creating a slogan at the top of my back cover. The reason for this is because when I done my research some horror films tend to have a slogan for the audience to catch their eye. So in this instance the slogan that I came up with is "Believe in it!". This slogan should attract the audience that these monsters are alive in the movie.

Also I will be adding 3 images to the back cover for this movie. Two of these images will have monsters and the third image will have the main character Jack Sparrow. To get these images I went on to Google Images and searched for them and then saved them on my back cover. For each of these image I have added a stroke on each image so it has a white border around it to make it stand out.

Using Oil Paint Filter on the Background

Now that I have created a front cover and a spine for my DVD cover I am going to add an advanced feature that will make the background look even more outstanding using a filter called Oil Paint. This feature allows me to change my background from a standard image to a painted effect image instantly. The reason why I chose to add this filter is because it creates a painted effect monster image which makes it even more realistic image. To get this filter I went in to filters and clicked on oil paint. This opened up a preview of how the oil paint effect will look and you can change the settings from here such as the style, cleanliness, scale etc. I decided to keep the settings at default when applied the filter.

Adding Character Names to the Cover

When I researched on dvd covers I noticed that some dvd covers have the names of the characters either at the top or botton of the dvd cover. This is why I will be adding the characters name at the bottom of the cover. The following characters will be in this movie: Jack Sparrow, Penelope Cruz.

Adding a Photo Filter to the Monster Image

There are many tools in Photoshop to create an effect for images but for this instance I have decided to use the Photo Filter effect. Essentially a photo filter can be used to warm up or cool an overall image by enhancing the colours of the image.  For this monster image I have increased the density to 30 to slightly increase the warmth of the image. The reason why I have decided to do this is because I did not want the overall image to be too dark as I wanted a mixture of light effect running through the image so the whole image is not dark.

Screenshot of the dvd image:

DVD Spine

The next step for the dvd cover is add a Spine to it. To do this I used a Rectangular shape in Photoshop to create an outline of the spine. This created a long rectangular spine where I will add the movie title, dvd logo and the movie rating to it. To add the movie title I used the Vertical Type Tool to add the movie title vertically so it goes down the spine. I then changed the font colour to red because this will create a light red blood colour of the title down the spine.
Next is to add a dvd logo to the spine which will represent this movie as a dvd and not a blueray movie. To get the dvd logo I went on to Google Images and saved a dvd logo image and then resized it so it fits at the top of the spine.
The reference for dvd logo: . 2014. . [ONLINE] Available at: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e9/DVD-VIDEO-AUDIO_logo.png. [Accessed 07 April 2014].
Finally to complete the spine I will be needing a rating logo at the bottom of the spine. This will identify the rating of the movie from the spine and also I will be adding a rating at the front of the dvd cover as well. I also went on to Google images and found a 12 certificate logo and placed it on the spine. I decided to add an effect to the movie rating as I would like it to stand out so therefore I decided to use the Bevel and Emboss effect to change the structure of the logo to almost like a 3D 12 certificate rating.

Using Filters, Levels and Vibrance

Now that I got an image for my dvd cover I need to create effect with this monster type image. So first of all I went on filter and into filter gallery. This opened up with a huge variety of filter that I can apply to this image. The one I decided to use is the Cross Hatch filter which is in the Brush Strokes folder. This enabled my image to have lines of cross hatch on the image to create a fantastic effect on the skull of this monster.

Levels is another effect that allowed me to create a light or a dark effect on the image so I decided to slightly make the image a bit dark to give a night background to it.

Vibrance allowed me to create more light which enabled me to create a glowing effect on the monsters eyes so it shines out glowing red.

Adding Effects to the Background Image

Now that I got my background image ready for the DVD Cover I can now add effects on it. The first effect that I chose is changing the Hue and the Saturation of the image. The reason why I decided to change the Hue/Saturation of the image is to increase the intensity of the monster's eyes so it glows bright red. This is to create a glowing effect.

Also I changed the Brightness and Contrast of the image as the original image was far too light therefore I decided to little bit darken the image so the image can be set in dark rather than day light.

Movie Title

Now for the movie title I decided to follow a tutorial to create my movie title because this allowed me to gain extra skills that I did not have before. The movie title has gold sparkle effects on it which makes it stand out on the cover. I wanted to do some self direction by following a step by step tutorial to create a fantastic movie title to stand out. This tutorial has given me a chance to show my creativity to follow simple instructions and achieve an outstanding movie title.

Background Image

For the background Image of my dvd cover I set it to a monster image with his skull and bright red eyes shining. The reason why I chose this image is because it suits with my film perfectly as the montser theme continues from the dvd cover in to the actual film. I want the title of the movie and images to stand out since this is a movie that contains monsters. I want it to appeal to the audience to give a scary feeling about this movie therefore I decided to use dark monster image.

Progress Review

Now I am at the stage where I am ready to start creating my DVD Cover for the assignment. When I created this document I used the Canvas size width of 279.05mm and the height of 189.09mm. These dimensions allowed me to get an outline of the dvd cover. Then around the dvd cover I added Guides for the Bleed and Safety Areas. Bleed Area is the area that continue to the edge of the paper. These areas gets cut down to size when printed out. To have a correct bleed area the industry standard is 3mm of bleed and safety area. The safety area should not have any text or image placed as they could get cut off when cutting.

DVD Template Design

Before I start my DVD Cover I created a template design in Photoshop of my DVD Cover. To do this I used the Rectangular Tool to create rectangular shapes of the design of my cover. The reason why I used this tool over other Shape tools is because I needed a rectangular shape as this shape would fit perfectly in the template design. I will be using this template as an outline to create my dvd cover for the film.

Below is a screenshot of my finished template design in Photoshop:

Progress Review - Photoshop Tutorial

Before starting my DVD template design I decided to do 1 photoshop tutorial of a image because this allowed me to gain extra skills by following step by step instructions so when I do create my dvd cover I can transfer those valuable skills across to my final piece of work. The tutorial that I completed was a Colourful Light Burst Text Effect in Photoshop. This tutorial showed me how to create layers, adding blur to the text effect, lighten the text to auto tone to bright the text, changing the colours using gradient effects. The reason why I chose this tutorial is because I will be using text for the title of the dvd cover as an effect to stand out in the middle of the dvd cover and I will be needing the skills to produce it.

Below is the link where I used this photoshop tutorial.

Legal Issues in Digital Imaging Software

Types of Intellectual Property

There are 4 types of IP which include Patents, Trademarks, Designs and Copyright. Patents protects the features and processes that make things work. So once it's patented no one can then copy, make, sell without your permission. Examples include Ipods, Widgets etc. Trademark is a sign which distinguish your goods or services from your competitors. It is like a brand and examples include Signs, Web Addresses, Logos etc. Designs is a legal right that protects the overall visual appearance of a product. A registered design will help you stop others from creating designs which is too similiar to yours. Finally Copyright protects many types of work, from music and lyrics to photographs. Copyright is an automatic right which means you don't have to apply. Examples include literacy works, Recording works, Software, Texts, Films etc.

Copyright and Creative Commons Licences

To create my DVD cover I will have to get around with copyright material such as images from the web and using them in my dvd cover. To get around them I will be havard referencing them and sourcing the image whether I use an image, texture, fonts for my cover. Creative Commons allow creators to share their work with others by providing free copyright licences and tools to share the work. Creative Commons licences is not an alternative to Copyright license but they can work alongside it to suit your needs when sharing materials.

DVD Amaray Style Case

An Amaray Style paper sleeve case has measurements of 129.5mm * 183mm which is the width and height of the front and back dvd cover. The dvd spine has a width of 14mm or less. Therefore the maximum dimensions would be 273mm * 183mm. Below is a link to show the DVD inlay specifications.

Key Visual Themes

Now I am at the stage where I have to identify  the Key Visual Themes for my DVD case wrap. I will be using quite dark intense colours to illustrate the background since this movie will contain monsters. I want to create an effect so that it appeals to the target auidence and stands out.

The Colour Scheme for the dvd cover that I will be using: Black, Orange, Yellow, Brown. The reason why I chose these colour scheme is to create an effect of a dark, lonely location where the film will take place. Once I have the colour scheme ready I can go online and get multiple images which have these colour schemes to get an idea on how the dvd colour scheme will look like.

Brainstorming Ideas

Film Ideas

For the Assessment I will create a DVD package for a film. This film will be called Monsters at the Caribbean. The genre of this film will be Action and Horror  and it will have a 12 rating for viewers. This film will have monsters in the jungle. I will be merging in monsters from multiple films. The reason why I chose Monsters at the Caribbean is because it's an original DVD film that I came up with and therefore it is not a sequel to the original pirates of the caribbean films. The target audience for the film would be teenagers all they way to adults who have an interest in action and horror films.

Cast for the film - Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Monsters

Similiar film Designs - Pirates of the Caribbean : The Curse of the Black Pearl
